Out and about in Austin, Texas

Last month we had the opportunity to watch a very special boy compete with his 4-H project for Champion Steer at the Star of Texas Stock Show in Austin, Texas.  This was no typical Champion Steer drive though- it was the 75th anniversary of the Stock Show- so the organizers wanted to make this a big deal.  And big they did-  streets in front of the State Capitol in Austin were closed, panels were brought in and there were a few cowboys on horseback. Each breed champion and reserve champion were hauled in trailers to the event- tv cameras were everywhere, this was not a normal event on the streets of downtown Austin!

The coolest part of it- was that there was a gentleman in attendance who had shown his steer in almost the same location in the 1950's, made me smile!!!  The kids were all very excited and nervous to be there- such an honor to be in a Champion drive.  Our young man did great with his project and we were very proud of him.  He was not the Champion or Reserve Steer overall- however- he was very proud of his steer and how far they had come together.  For us- that is what mattered the most!

After being in front of the beautiful state Capitol I asked my Cattleman if he would treat me to lunch at a little sandwich shop just north of downtown before heading back out to the Stock Show grounds.  I was delighted that he said yes.

So- off we headed to the Avenue B Grocery.  According to it's location and the throwback in time on the inside it's easy to see that this place has been around for more than a century!  We couldn't take photos on the inside- but did snap this one outside that mimics the one from Country Living magazine promoting things to do in Austin while in town for their Country Living Fair!

The food was wonderful- but even better were the little picnic tables outside on a beautiful spring Texas afternoon.  We were allowed to sample a few items off the menu before making our final decisions- and as usual, we all got something a little different so we could sample from each other as well!

While dining we met a man from Denmark- he had some meetings in Houston and decided to come to Austin for the weekend.  How he found this place- no telling.  However-he loved it and the people he had met (our family included- I think he was mesmerized by the cowboy hats).  Seemed like he was really receiving good ole Texas hospitality!  So- to the kind man from Denmark- thanks for taking our photo and we hope you enjoyed the rest of your stay!

If you are headed to Austin for the Country Living Fair this weekend like Tracy is (I might be headed there at some point) and have time to spin around town- this would be a suggestion for some good vittles!  Whatever you may be doing- have a wonderful weekend!!
